Reiki is an ancient Japanese method of stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes self-healing. Reiki is a disciplined practice, much like Tai Chi or Qi Gong. It requires training and self discipline, yet is very easy to learn. Reiki practice is based on the understanding that all living things have natural energy flowing through them, a life energy (ki in Japanese, chi in Chinese, ka in Egyptian, Prana (Sansrkit for "breath of life") in Ayurveda/yoga/Indian practices, etc.).
When our life energy flows in a natural and balanced state, we feel strong & confident, are more relaxed & centered. This is the state of being that is conducive to health and we are less likely to get sick.
When our life energy is stressed, we often feel tired and become less resistant to illness or traumatic events. So many of us are in a constant state of "fight or flight" (sympathetic state) and hyper anxiety and may not even be aware, leading to stressed life energy. This can cause many things depending upon each unique individual, but most people don't know how to get back into a balanced, calm state of being.
Reiki works by aiding and strengthening a person's own ability to balance life energy, thereby helping him or her to heal and stay healthy in a natural way. The cumulative benefits of Reiki are truly life-changing for those who practice as little as 5-15 minutes per day.
Practitioners are trained to work with clients and help them feel the practice of Reiki. This can be done with a person lying flat or sitting in a chair. As the Practitioner practices Reiki, the client feels the balanced state and soon can sense the inner harmony and flow that modern science refers to as the parasympathetic state. When we are in our balanced, parasympathetic state, our bodies can heal faster with less effort.
The current technique practiced was developed in the early 1900's and is diverse in its branches of training.
Reiki is a word that has been recognized and used in Japan for centuries. The word itself has a dual meaning in that it describes a force of nature, and a practice to feel and use that force of nature within one’s own body. Much like the word “basketball” means both a ball and a game using that ball, Reiki is both a natural energy force and also the practice of sensing and allowing that force to flow naturally.
The modern method used at Reiki Mississippi™, more correctly known as The Usui Method of Natural Healing, came to the U.S. in 1938 and is widely used throughout the world, with millions of certified practitioners on every continent.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of relaxation that everyone can learn to use. It has been proven effective as a complimentary healing technique and works in conjunction with all medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve and lessen side effects and promote recovery.
It is listed on numerous hospital websites as safe and effective complimentary treatment. Many main-stream doctors, such as renowned heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, support the use of Reiki and have said so publicly (see http://reikioncall.com/pdf/DrOz.pdf ).
During a professional Reiki session, a trained Reiki Practitioner begins by practicing Reiki, gently comes close to the client with their hands, then lightly places their hands on or over areas of the client's body. The client may be sitting or lying down. There is no manipulation of the body, no massage, and touching the person is not even required. The feeling of relaxation is felt by the client without the aid of any tools, devices, or medicines. The process is known as "energy entrainment" in the scientific world, and is a natural law of physics.

Reiki feels different for everyone, but most people report a gentle warmth or slight tingly feeling. Each person is unique, and how one senses Reiki depends on the level of stress when engaging in the practice. Mostly, a treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance and calmness that flows through and around you.
Reiki affects the whole person – body, emotions, mind and spirit – creating many beneficial sensations reported as feelings of peace, security and well-being. Many people fall asleep, because they are so relaxed! If you have been totally “wound-up” from stress for a long time, you may be very surprised at how restful and calm you feel after a Reiki session. It’s wonderful!
Occasionally a person will not sense anything at all, or it may take two or more sessions to really “feel” the relaxing effects of Reiki, especially if under chronic stress over a long period of time. No matter – it is working whether one feels it or not. Usually, the more aware you are of your own body and energy, the more you “feel” it.
Is Reiki associated with any religion? NO!
In fact, there is no belief in anything spiritual required for Reiki to work. In reality, Reiki practice benefits all living things, including plants and animals – so, no religious beliefs or practices are necessary.
Because many Reiki practitioners ( as well as many doctors and health professionals) believe that healing comes from a divine source, or God, it is sometimes erroneously assumed that one must follow certain spiritual principles to receive or benefit from Reiki. Just as in other professions, there are Reiki practitioners of every religion around the globe, as well as non- religious practitioners.
You are encouraged to research Reiki before seeking a treatment, as Reiki practitioners believe that all people must exercise free will when receiving healing assistance.
There are no reported harmful side effects from receiving a Reiki treatment!
This is especially good news considering the devastating effects of some medicines and therapies (such as radiation and chemo) that are widely in use today. Reiki has been said by recipients to lessen the effects of these above mentioned therapies and to help the body rid itself of toxins and impurities.
The most influential and well known healing centers and hospitals in the world advocate Reiki and other relaxation therapies as complimentary/integrative healing support.
Slight effects after a session may include a need to use the bathroom more frequently, the sniffles or other cold like symptoms as the body flushes out illness, but not everyone will experience this. If your body begins cleansing itself and rebalancing, drink plenty off water, rest, and be grateful for what’s leaving your life!
The goal of every Reiki session is to help a person regain the natural, healthful state of balance and wellness, and by doing so, to alleviate the symptoms or conditions that make us feel ill.
